Westlake Village began as a visionary master-planned community in the 1960s—designed as a “city in the country,” with neighborhoods, shopping, green space, and the lake as the centerpiece.
When was the lake created?
Westlake Lake is man-made. Developers built a dam across Potrero Creek and completed the lake in 1969, shaping the community’s iconic lakefront lifestyle.
What kind of community is it today?
Today, Westlake Village is known for its beautiful, well-kept neighborhoods, strong community feel, and an active outdoor lifestyle centered around the lake—walking paths, sailing, and that peaceful “escape” vibe while still close to LA. The City of Westlake Village was incorporated in 1981 and remains a unique community along the LA/Ventura county line.
